PRK

What Is Photorefractive Keratectomy?

Photorefractive Keratectomy is a refractive surgery that is very similar to LASIK. Both LASIK and PRK use an excimer laser. Both can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Both ultimately produce identical visual results.

LASIK Vs. PRK

The primary difference between LASIK and PRK is that LASIK requires the creation of a corneal flap, whereas PRK does not. Laser treatment in PRK is applied directly to the outermost corneal cells. This generally results in a few differences. The recovery period from PRK is longer.

Candidates For PRK

Patients who are not good candidates for LASIK because of thin corneas, overly steep corneas, or corneas that are too flat may be good candidates for PRK. This makes PRK a great LASIK alternative.
