What Are Premium Lens Implants?
Premium Lens Implants, what we like to call LifeStyle lenses or IOLs, can reduce or even eliminate the need for reading glasses or bifocals after undergoing cataract surgery. These innovative lenses can allow patients to see at multiple ranges including near and far away. Dr. Rom of Insight Eye Center offers the Symphony, Toric, Tecnis, and enVista LifeStyle IOLs to his patients.
PanOptix IOL by Alcon
PanOptix is the first trifocal intraocular lens to be approved by the FDA. Prior to its use here in the U.S., this IOL became one of the leading presbyopia-correcting lenses in 70-plus other countries. The trifocal lens is designed to support everyday activities; from reading in lower-light environments to working on a computer screen to driving across town. Vision at all distances is supported via ENLIGHTEN®Optical Technology, which improves intermediate vision without jeopardizing near or distance vision.

Vivity IOL by Alcon
The Alcon AcrySof® IQ Vivity® lens, which enables high-quality distance and intermediate vision, and functional close-up vision. Vivity uses a new, non-diffractive technology called X-Wave™. Alcon’s proprietary non-diffractive technology uses all available light to create a continuous, extended range of vision. Patients with other multifocal lenses often complain about visual disturbances such as halos, starbursts, and glare. Some patients opt for monofocal lenses because they have a much lower rate of these post-cataract side effects.

Symfony IOL By AMO
At Insight Eye Center, we are proud to be one of the first practices in the region to offer our patients the Symfony IOL by AMO, which can not only reduce or eliminate the need for reading glasses or bifocals after cataract surgery, unlike other multifocal IOLs, the Symfony lens gives patients an extended range of vision, which means objects don’t have to be held at an exact distance in order to be seen clearly. The Symfony lens is also designed to reduce glare and halos, providing improved night vision. With the Symfony IOL, patients can have a clearer vision at all distances including near, far and everything in-between.
Toric Lens For Astigmatism
For patients that have a more severe amount of astigmatism, a toric IOL might be needed. This is a type of lens designed to correct astigmatism during cataract surgery. This lens is implanted in the exact same way as the standard monofocal IOL, but it has a special shape that can be customized to correct astigmatisms of varying degrees.
Toric IOLs are extremely predicable and procedure excellent outcomes. In some cases, Dr. Rom might have to perform an LRI in additional to a Toric IOL to fully correct your astigmatism.
Choosing The Right Lens Option After Cataract Surgery
Patients that want to live an active lifestyle and want to enjoy the freedom to enjoy activities without glasses should ask about the Symfony lens at Insight Eye Center. For patients who opt for premium lens implants, the cataract surgery technique is the exact same, only the implant is different. Dr. Rom will talk to patients about their lens options during their cataract exam.
What To Expect During Your IOL Surgery
When undergoing cataract surgery, Dr. Rom will remove your natural lens (where the cataract has formed) and replace it with an artificial lens. Most insurance companies reimburse for a standard lens implant or standard IOL. These lenses allow patients to have cataract free vision, but patients may have to wear glasses to see well in the distance and will have to wear reading glasses or bifocals in order to see well up close and intermediate distances.
What Is The Difference Between A Standard Monofocal Lens And A Premium Lens?
In general, greater independence. A premium lens will provide a greater range of focus than a monofocal IOL.
Is A Premium Lens Worth It?
We look at it this way: there are very few investments you can make that you will use every waking moment for the rest of your life. A PIOL is one such investment, and if it’s something that you can afford, then it’s something you will want to have. If a PIOL is something that you are interested in, then we recommend mentioning that at your cataract surgery consultation.
What Our Patients Have To Say
“The professionalism of Dr. Rom and his staff is refreshing. The communication regarding the surgery was excellent. Most important to me was that my cataract surgery was completely painless. I will highly recommend Dr. Rom to my friends.” – B.B
Our Technology
At Insight Eye Center, Dr. Michael Rom utilizes state-of-the-art technology for his procedures. We use the Callisto by Zeiss for both Toric IOLs and PanOptix IOLs.
Are IOLs Covered By Insurance?
For almost all cases, no. This does add some out-of-pocket expense to the patient. However, it is worth noting that the majority of cataract surgery cost is still covered by medical insurance. The surgeon’s fee, too, is covered by insurance still, because your surgeon will perform the same surgical procedure regardless of which lens you implant.
