Eye Conditions We Diagnose and Treat
Insight Eye Center is a medical ophthalmology practice. Alongside cataract surgery and glaucoma care, Dr. Michael E. Rom diagnoses and manages the eye conditions that commonly affect adults — dry eye, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, flashes and floaters, retinal detachment and refractive errors — at the Mentor Avenue office, and coordinates specialist care when it is needed.
Which eye conditions does Insight Eye Center treat?
Beyond cataracts and glaucoma, Dr. Rom diagnoses and manages the medical eye conditions that most often affect adults: dry eye, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, flashes and floaters, retinal tears and detachment, and refractive errors. Each page below explains the condition in plain language — what it is, the symptoms, how it is diagnosed, and how it is treated.
- Cataracts clouding of the natural lens; surgery restores clear vision
- Glaucoma pressure damage to the optic nerve; drops, laser and surgery
- Dry eye too few or poor-quality tears; burning, redness, watering
- Diabetic retinopathy diabetes damaging the retina's blood vessels
- Macular degeneration age-related loss of central vision, dry and wet forms
- Flashes and floaters usually harmless aging changes — sometimes a retinal tear
- Retinal detachment an emergency: the retina separates from the back of the eye
- Refractive errors nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia

What happens at a medical eye exam?
A medical eye exam at the Mentor office takes about an hour. It measures your vision and glasses prescription, checks the pressure inside the eye, and — after dilating drops — examines the lens, retina and optic nerve in detail. Depending on what Dr. Rom finds, imaging of the retina or optic nerve may be added the same day.
Because your pupils are dilated, expect blurry near vision and light sensitivity for a few hours afterward; bring sunglasses and, if you are unsure about driving, a driver. Bring your glasses, a list of your medications, and your insurance card.
Medical eye exams for a condition or a symptom are covered by Medicare and most medical insurance plans, subject to your deductible and coinsurance. Routine vision exams for glasses may fall under a separate vision plan; ask the office if you are unsure.
Which eye symptoms need same-day attention?
Call the office the same day for a sudden loss or blurring of vision, a curtain or shadow across part of your vision, a sudden shower of new floaters or flashes of light, severe eye pain with redness or nausea, or an eye injury. These can be signs of a retinal tear or detachment, an acute glaucoma attack or another problem where hours matter.
Symptoms that develop gradually — slowly blurring vision, glare at night, dry or itchy eyes, a prescription that keeps changing — should still be looked at, but at a scheduled visit. When in doubt, call (440) 286-1188 and describe what you are noticing; the staff will tell you how soon you should be seen.

Yes. Dr. Rom provides comprehensive eye exams as well as care for medical eye conditions. Call the office to ask about scheduling and which insurance or vision plans apply.
